Pixar Animation is producing a new short for the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June. Called Sanjay’s Super Team the short will start Sanjay acting out his imagination in a hotel while his father is in religious mediation. What’s interesting is that this short will have a non-white main character for the short. Created by Sanjay Patel, he wanted to produce a film that helped to normalize people of South Asian decent in pop culture. Speaking to the LA Times, “If I could, I would go back to the 1980s and give my younger self this short…I want to normalize and bring a young brown boy’s story to the pop culture zeitgeist. To have a broad audience like Pixar’s see this … it is a big deal. I’m so excited about that.”
The short will show at Annecy and then will come into the Fall with The Good Dinosaur. Hopefully, coming off of the recent success of Home and even with both UP and Inside Out for Pixaar, studios like Pixar will continue to diversify their leads in many aspects.
