Motherboard Investigates Scanlations

by AJ Adejare

Motherboard recently did a piece on the unofficial translation scene for animation, more commonly known as scanlations.  The piece dives into what makes people go and translate pieces unofficially as well as the history of scanlations.  It also describes the scene as it transitioned to today’s standard as well as the effects that piracy may have to the companies.

While the piece has great merit, it failed to push the interviewers a bit on offical translation and why the still pursue it even though the creator signed off on it.  It also should have checked for the area between scanlators and scanlation uploader.

With that said, it’s a good read, go check it out.
